Parliamentarians use parliamentary questions to promote security sector oversight in the United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom (UK), parliamentary questions were used as a prominent tool of security sector oversight by parliamentarians during the COVID-19 pandemic.

From March 2020 to March 2021, MPs used written parliamentary questions extensively in order to fulfil their security sector oversight role, submitting 469 questions related just to COVID-19. Of these, 257 were asked to the Ministry of Defence (211 from the House of Commons and 46 from the House of Lords) and 212 were posed to the Home Office (156 from the House of Commons and 55 from the House of Lords). Oversight tools such as this are directly linked to the achievement of SDG Target 16.6 on developing effective, accountable, and transparent public institutions.
