Independent oversight bodies include national human rights commissions, ombuds institutions, public defenders, anti-corruption agencies and auditors general.
Depending on their mandate, these institutions act as oversight mechanisms regarding respect for human rights by security institutions; and respect for the rights of users of public services. In receiving and investigating complaints, these institutions strengthen links between security sector institutions and the civilian population.
DCAF supports independent oversight institutions in Côte d’Ivoire, Mali and Niger to perform their oversight role more effectively through technical advice, training, and capacity building. DCAF also provides support to the organisation of the yearly International Conference of Ombuds institutions for the Armed Forces.
