Supporting networks of SSG/R practitioners in Asia-Pacific This week our Asia-Pacific Unit team are in Indonesia hosting a week-long Asia-Pacific SSG Forum. Representatives of national governments, civil society groups, and security institutions from across the region have gathered to engage in a region-wide exchange and debate on key Security Sector Governance (SSG) challenges and opportunities. Over the week they’ll share experiences, best practices, and lessons learned on topics such as citizen oversight, cybersecurity, and climate security and its implications for the security sector.                 29 Sep 2022

Holding mercenaries accountable for human rights abuses This week Jean-Michel Rousseau of our Business & Security team and Dr Sorcha McLeod, the Chair-Rapporteur of the UN Working Group on Mercenaries, launched the Group’s latest report, Access to justice, accountability, and remedies for victims of mercenaries, mercenary-related actors and private military and security companies. While there are international norms and good practices to address the actions of mercenaries and private military and security companies, the report explores the challenges encountered by victims in accessing justice and adopts a comprehensive approach to accountability.      28 Sep 2022

Advancing gender equality in the security sector Cristina Finch, Head of our Gender & Security team, co-hosted a side event at the Warsaw Human Dimension Conference this week with the Deputy Director of the North Macedonia Intelligence Agency, Aleksandra Bakrevska-Dodovska. The 10-day event looks at the state of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the OSCE region, which includes 57 states in Europe, Asia, and North America. Our side event focused on how to support gender sensitive policies and practices in the security sector, and practical tools to achieve it, such as the Gender and Security Toolkit, produced by OSCE/ODIHR, UN Women, and DCAF.   27 Sep 2022

Supporting reforms to immigration policy and practice in The Gambia Last week we welcomed a delegation from The Gambia to discuss our support increased effectiveness and accountability of the Gambia Immigration Department (GID). Gambia’s President Adama Barrow mentioned our support in his 2022 State of the Nation Legislative Address. “The GID collaborated with DCAF to amend the current 1965 Immigration Act and align it with international standards. This amendment will lead to the enactment of the Immigration Service Act 2023.” We’ve been supporting SSG/R in The Gambia since 2017, thanks to the generosity of the EU, France, Germany, and the UK.    26 Sep 2022

Improving the quality of criminal investigations in Libya The Libyan Criminal Investigations Department of the Ministry of Interior took part in a 10 day specialized training in investigative techniques with relation to evidence gathering, crime scenes, informants, and witness protection. The goal is to improve compliance with international best practices and help safeguard due process for the accused. The training was conducted by the European Gendarmerie Force with the Guarda Nacional Republicana and supported through our Trust Fund for North Africa.  23 Sep 2022
