Warm welcome for new Director of GICHD This week DCAF’s Director Nathalie Chuard (left) and Thomas Greminger, Director of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (right) welcomed Tobias Privitelli, the new Director of the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining. The three ‘Geneva Centres’ as they are widely known, are all funded in large part by the Swiss government. We work from different angles to support the same goals: peace and security, especially in fragile and conflict-affected places. The three Directors meet regularly to talk about how the Centres can collaborate to maximize their impact and best support the work being done across International Geneva. 30 Aug 2024

New elearning on the links between SSG/R and the environment Are military greenhouse gas emissions part of the Paris Agreement? Who is enforcing fishing laws on the high seas? What is the role of organized crime in the deforestation of tropical rainforests? Is ecocide mentioned in the Rome Statute? The links between the environment and security sector governance are many, and complex. There is a burgeoning body of resources on where climate change intersects with environmental crime, green corruption, and natural disasters. We’ve put together this free and easy elearning to help you make sense of it all. 21 Aug 2024

Bringing together ombuds institutions to learn from one another Recently, DCAF supported the Ombuds Offices of Colombia and Peru to come together in Lima for three days of knowledge sharing and discussion about their experiences protecting human rights in their countries. Following the event, the two institutions agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to continue working together. National ombuds institutions provide oversight to ensure that government agencies and security sector institutions respect the rule of law and the human rights of citizens. This exchange is part of DCAF's ongoing work in Latin America which is possible thanks to the generous support of the German government. 16 Aug 2024

Developing fire and safety regulations in The Gambia Thanks to generous funding from the French government, DCAF will be supporting The Gambia Fire and Rescue Service to develop new regulations on the design, construction, and fire safety measures for public buildings. We will also help draft regulations for the inspection, storage, movement and usage of liquefied petroleum gas. The project's launch event also served to reaffirm the government's commitment to ongoing security sector reform initiatives, with a representative of the Ministry of Interior noting, "We remain steadfast in our commitment to the SSR process. We recognize that our security institutions, including the Fire and Rescue and Prisons services, require continuous support and development." 13 Aug 2024
