Security Sector Governance Intern, Sub-Saharan Africa Division
The Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF) seeks a Governance intern with an interest in international security and previous experience with global governance programmes. This is an eight week assignment for someone working remotely or based in Geneva.
DCAF is dedicated to making states and people safer. Good security sector governance, based on the rule of law and respect for human rights, is the very basis of development and security. DCAF assists partner states in developing laws, institutions, policies and practices to improve the governance of their security sector through inclusive and participatory reforms based on international norms and good practices. Headquartered in Geneva, DCAF has a global portfolio and employs over 170 highly qualified international staff with operational activities in over 70 countries. DCAF is internationally recognized as one of the world’s leading centres of excellence for security sector governance (SSG) and security sector reform (SSR).
Since the establishment of its Africa Programme in 2004, DCAF has developed working relationships with national, sub-regional and regional actors across the continent. At the national level, DCAF provides extensive support to national stakeholders in various countries, mainly in the West Africa sub region, focusing on the development of government capacities for nationally-led reforms, strengthening parliamentary oversight capacities, empowering civil society and independent oversight bodies to carry out their democratic oversight mission, and supporting the integration of a gender analysis and tools into security policies and practices.
The Governance intern will support DCAF Sub-Sahara Africa Division through the following activities:
- Supporting the monitoring and evaluation of project implementation
- Collection and organization of data that contributes to results indicators for a portfolio of projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Compilation of good practices on the measurement of impact of governance projects on community policing, security and defense integrity, and capacity building of independent oversight bodies.
- Monitoring and providing weekly written reports on political developments in countries of specific interest to the Division.
- Researching and providing briefing papers on various related topics
Position location: preferably Geneva, Switzerland, or remotely. Geneva based candidates must be Swiss of EU citizens, or permit B/C holder. Candidates should have excellent English writing skills; fluency in French preferred.
Period of contract: 2 months
