Assistant Director and Head of Middle East and North Africa Division

Arnold Luethold joined DCAF in 2003 as Head of the DCAF Programme for Security Sector Governance and Security Sector Reform in the Middle East and North Africa.

He previously worked at the Swiss Federal Department of Justice in Bern and as Representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in various postings in the Middle East and in Geneva (1985-2003): Delegate for the Israeli Occupied Territories in East-Jerusalem and the West Bank (1985-87), Deputy Head of Mission in Iraq (1987-1989), Regional Director for the Arabian Peninsula based in Riyadh (1990-1993) and Kuwait (1993-96). At ICRC headquarters in Geneva, he subsequently held the positions of Deputy Head and Head ad interim of the International Organizations Division in Geneva (1997-2003). Mr. Luethold negotiated and directed humanitarian operations in some major conflicts in the Middle East and was ICRC's representative to the Islamic Conference Organization, the League of Arab States and various inter-parliamentary organisations.

Arnold Luethold studied Linguistics and Philosophy at the Universities of Fribourg and Geneva (MPhil). He also holds a MBA in Strategic Management.
