NATO and NATO Parliamentary Assembly

DCAF's cooperation with NATO and the NATO Parliamentary Assembly is shaped by Switzerland's participation in NATO's 'Partnership for Peace' (PfP) Programme in Central and Eastern Europe. Over time, a number of cooperation platforms have been used to contribute DCAF inputs into security sector governance programmes in the PfP area.

Since 2006, DCAF has cooperated with the NATO Integrity Building Team and Transparency International UK's Defence Against Corruption Programme  on "Building Integrity and Reducing Corruption in the Defence Sector". The project led to the publication of an Integrity Building Handbook  in early 2010.

Since 2005, DCAF has facilitated programming on Partnership Action Plan on Defence Institution Building (PAP-DIB) programmes. Programming has mainly involved training courses and the development of relevant knowledge materials.

Also since 2005, cooperation with the NATO Department for Policy & Planning (DPP) has supported parallel DCAF programming in Ukraine, leading to closer cooperation via the NATO-Ukraine Joint Working Group on Defence Reform on Defence and Intelligence Reform issues (JWGDR), focused principally on areas of Defence and Intelligence Reform issues, as well as a number of conferences on security governance issues.

From 2001, DCAF has cooperated closely with the NATO Parliamentary Assembly on training for MPs and Parliamentary Staffers, providing input to Rose-Roth conferences, and local cooperation in Brussels. At the same time, DCAF actively managed the Security Sector Reform Working Group of the PfP Consortium of Defence Academies. More recently, this cooperation has diversified to include gender and security sector reform issues.
